National Science Foundation Acclimation Project.

Abstract: These microclimate data are being collected at two common garden locations to quantify the natural ambient temperatures for air and soil. This project will support other physiological projects that have been or will be collected.
Location(s), Described: Driving Directions:

Site A. Coweeta Site: take 441 to one mile south of Otto, North Carolina; turn at Southern Research Station sign onto Coweeta Lab Road approximately three miles to entrance of lab. Plot is on right just as you enter the lab area.

Site B: Deep Gap Site: take 441 to 64 west in Franklin, NC; continue on 64 west 0.25 mile past the Macon /Clay County line; take left onto Deep Gap road following it for approximately a half a mile to dirt road intersection on left; take dirt road approximately 2-5 miles until you see sign for Park Creek Trail and Park Ridge Trail; go through locked Forest Service gate staying straight through intersections to end where Deep Gap Triangle plot is found. Deep Gap rectangle plot is 2/10 of a mile before triangle on left fork.
Location(s), Download GPS: ArcView Shape Files (shp.):  UTM, NAD83, Zone 17   Lat/Lon
Location(s), Online Map(s): Note:  A map was not generated for this project. Site A is located immediately adjacent to the Coweeta Research Laboratory and Site B is external to Coweeta Hydrologic Lab.
Methods/Experimental Design: Air and soil temperatures are recorded hourly and are collected continuously. Dataloggers are positioned in the center of three deciduous tree plots (Coweeta, Deep Gap triangle, and Deep Gap rectangle). The air temperature sensors were installed 60 cm above the soil surface and the soil temperature sensors were installed horizontally 20 cm below the soil surface. The dataloggers are Hobo Pro Series Temperature and External Temperature models.
Sampling Frequency: Hourly.
Data Columns: site - Study site (Coweeta, Deep gap triangle, or Deep gap rectangle)
year - Year
julday - Julian day, or day of year
time - Hour, minute, and second of data collection (e.g. 10:55:34)
airtemp - Air temperature; degrees Celsius (C)
soiltemp - Soil temperature; degrees Celsius (C)

Missing Data Codes: . (Period)
